Literature Text

Jake actually pulled her mattress into Lund's room to take a nap on his floor.  She passed out almost immediately, and that gave Lund a few minutes to contemplate his future big brother a bit.

For whatever reason, and while he did marketing he was no psychologist, she did not want to be alone.  Waiting for him up here in her room for a week must have been unbearable for her.  He mused that his brother was going to be the kind of guy who dated serially- one pretty girl after the next, trying to satiate that loneliness instead of finding himself.  Lund had a feeling he'd be doing a lot of listening to his dating woes and letting Jake cry on his shoulder.

He was also going to be high energy, and probably a sports nut.  He could see why they chose Jake: energy, playfulness and a drive to evade loneliness that will drive him to every Hollywood starlet (and tabloid cover) in existence.  He saw Jake being the louder of the two of them.

For himself, he saw a less flashy, more intense career with serious roles where he attempted to avoid the limelight, but ended up in it because of his popularity as a performer.  He would be the quiet one, the serious one.  And he was okay with that.

In the flashes of moments before he fell asleep, pondered his life: his childhood feeling confused at not liking 'boy' things and not feeling part of any crowd; staying at home in Queens during his time at NYU because of his mother's cancer and his father's apparent inability to care for her or anyone; moving out to L.A. after his mother's death and getting married to Callie on a whim; Callie's descent from being the sweet, pretty girl who seemed to need him to the obnoxious, tempestuous, woman who derided him even more so than the ample times she derided herself; his final confrontation with himself when he admitted to himself what he wanted to be and that he needed to leave Callie; the ugly divorce and subsequent therapy to determine if he indeed qualified for a sex change operation; and, finally, receiving a certified letter in the mail from the law offices of Charles Quick asking him to meet with Roger Stein, M.D., Ph.D. regarding an experimental method of sex reassignment.

As his own brief summary rocketed through his consciousness, he willed it away.  He banished it all from his mind, banned it from his recollection of who he was and finally felt relief when his mind's eye only saw a giant slate tile, clean except the word 'Keira' written in green chalk across the surface.

--

When he woke, Lund had that feeling of something being off. It was the same feeling he'd get when he'd fall asleep on a Saturday afternoon in the winter and wake up confused to whether or not he'd slept 2 hours or 12.

"Hello, Keira." Roger was hovering next to him, over the sleeping form of Jake who was still camped out on the floor on his mattress, "You've had everyone quite worried, you've been asleep since 4:00pm yesterday.  I told them there was a 98% chance you would wake up today at 6:00am, which you have.  Joan will be here in a minute, but I wanted to make sure you were okay.  You went through a lot of changes overnight."

Lund whispered, "I guess-" and stopped.  His whispered voice sounded different to him.

Roger twinkled a bit, "Yes, you've lost about six inches since yesterday, and about 60 lbs.  You're moving quite quickly, like you somehow boosted the spell in your sleep."

"I guess," Lund stopped again, trying to look at his hands in the dim dawn, amazed at his new pitch of whisper, "I... I dunno.. I remember dreaming away my past and embracing my future, or something like that, before I fell asleep.  I lost that much height?  That's almost half of what I'm supposed to lose."

Jake stirred on the floor, "Huh? Hey... you're awake... oh, hey Roger."

"Hello, Jake.  I see you've not changed much."

"That's because puberty passed me by the first time, but I bet I lost 2 inches at least!"

Joan knocked on the door, "Are you both awake in there?"

"Yeah, Keira's awake!"

Joan came in and started fussing over Lund immediately, "Oh, look at you, all that hair on that head, and we have to get you in some smaller clothes."

Lund swung his legs over the bed's edge. His feet touched the floor, but not as definitively as before, nor was he sitting far back on the bed as always. The sweats he had fallen asleep in pooled at his feet, and the t-shirt was too big. "Wow."  He stopped again, hearing a voice that was adult male, but higher pitched. "Oh that's weird."

Joan turned on the light and they all blinked.  Lund saw Jake better, and she was looking younger.  Any telltale signs, and they had been subtle on her, that made him think she was in her 20's, were gone.  Her skin was smoother and cleaner, the stress in her face from being a Nurse's Aid and taking care of the elderly were gone, and she was smaller.

He put his hands, and there were only fine prepubescent hairs on the back of them.  The same went for his arms.  "Well, I, don't know what to say."

"How about we let you get dressed and then we'll all go downstairs for measurements and breakfast.  Keira, you should be starving, you haven't eaten since yesterday when you two made sandwiches.  I'm just glad you're okay, though.  Roger told us you were, but still I worried."

"Thank you, Mama Joan."

"We'll let you get changed, you know there's a variety of sweatpants and t-shirts for you to try and find something that fits."

"Mama Joan, can you come here for a second?"

"Sure."

Lund whispered something in her ear, "Oh, yes, Keira, email me the link and I'll work on that for you.  It's only fair to pick that out."

"What is it?!" Jake popped up from her mattress.

Lund looked over at her, "My little secret.  A girl's entitled to those."

Jake leered at him playfully, "You're learning.  Nicely played, little sis."  And then Jake bolted for Lund's laptop.

"Go ahead, it's not bookmarked in there, and I clear the history after each browser session.  Nothing to see."

Jake gave him a real look of frustration, "Oh?  And how are you going to find it again."

Lund tapped the side of his head with one finger, "I have a very good memory, dear brother.  You won't be getting away with anything."

"God!  You are such a girl!  You're going to remember everything I do and say, aren't you?"

Lund just beamed at her.
